Singer Tosh Alexander has signed with the United Kingdom-based BrukOut label which is distributed by Polydor, an affiliate of Universal Music.
“I’m excited and very grateful because this is what I’ve been working towards my whole career. I’m looking forward to this opportunity and taking my brand to the next level,” she said in an interview with The Jamaica Observer’s Splash.
BrukOut was launched two years ago to promote and celebrate Caribbean music and culture. Its founder is Seani B, a well-known radio disc jockey/music producer who works with BBC 1Xtra. His partners are Ray Paul, a co-founder of 1Xtra and Yaw Owusu, a key figure of the Liverpool International Music Festival.
“ BrukOut being under the Polydor/Universal umbrella feels like a good fit because they are a fusion of both the Caribbean and the UK market. They ideally get the sound and direction but also will be able to provide an international platform for my music,” said Alexander. “Ideally, I just want for my brand to grow, my music to be showcased and to be allowed the opportunity to showcase who I am.”
On June 29, BrukOut will release the single Bubble, which Alexander does with Miss Kitty.
“From the moment we heard Bubble we knew it had all the elements of a summertime hit! That authentic, dancehall rhythm coupled with Tosh’s flow means that this is shaping up to be a smash,” Seani B gushed.
The Brooklyn, New York-born Tosh Alexander is of Jamaican parentage. She was raised in Jamaica and attended Immaculate Conception High School before relocating to Florida. She was a member of girl group Xclusive which was managed by Makael Manley, former guitarist with The Commodores.
After going solo, she returned to Jamaica last year to reconnect with her roots. Her EP, WorththeWait, contained the single Ready Fi Dem which was produced by Andre “Suku” Gray of Ward 21.
Tosh Alexander holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and Communications from Florida International University.
