NEW YORK-BASED SINGER, SO’NIA, GOES GOSPEL!

So’Nia made a name singing secular music, especially matters of the heart. She has, however, decided to expand her horizons by stepping into gospel.

“The latest single I am promoting is my first gospel song and it is called Holy is the Lord. I am also working on my first gospel album while expanding my talent,” So’Nia told the Jamaica Observer.

Holy is the Lord is produced by US-based reggae singer and producer Ed Robinson.

“Music for me has been great, but it comes with challenges. You just have to stay focused and be true to your music, yourself and follow your dream,” said So’Nia.

So’Nia’s given name is Sonia Williams. Originally from Mandeville, she grew up in St Elizabeth.

While attending high school, she and two other friends formed the female gospel outfit SMC Trio. She also sang with Byron Lee’s Dragonaires before she migrated to the United States almost 30 years ago. She spoke about the highlight of her career.

“So far, the highlight of my career has been performing on stage with some of reggae music’s biggest names, including Ed Robinson , Freddie McGregor, Maxi Priest, Steel Pulse, Glen Washington and Ziggy Marley. I also enjoy travelling as well, as this helps me to learn about different cultures.”
