Reggae artiste Jah Mason has joined forces with the New York-based JMR Auto Center Youth Program to give aid to students in the parishes of Manchester, Westmoreland, St Elizabeth and Clarendon.
The singjay, who’s known for songs such as Princess Gone, and Don’t Sell Your Soul, has been working with the organisation since it was launched in 2014.
“One of the biggest ways to improve the lives of the youths is to ensure that they get a good education, and we are doing as much we can to make that possible,” said Jah Mason.
The program was created by two Jamaica-born businessmen, Ryan Francis (Jah Mason’s brother) and Junior Walker, owners of the Queens, New York-based JMR Auto Center.
“Ryan and I have been friends since high school; we grew up in the same neighborhood. We also went to trade school together and eventually we opened our own auto shop in 2011. As Jamaicans who have done well for ourselves. We want to give something back to our country, that’s why we started the foundation,” said Walker.
Since the launch of the foundation, several schools across the island have benefited from its beneficence.
“Last year, we sent down several barrels of school supplies which included books, pencils, pens erasers and school bags. These items were distributed to schools in the parishes of Manchester, St Elizabeth and Clarendon,” he said.
This year, the foundation plans to double its efforts in assisting children with back-to-school supplies.
Francis said the project is a team effort.
“My brothers Jah Mason and I Tru Jah and the Jah Stars Family also play a huge role in this project,” he said. “It’s a real team effort, we all want to do something to better the lives of as many children as possible in Jamaica. We also send down things for the elderly folks in several communities, including wheelchairs and walkers. Babymothers are not left out, as we also send baby supplies, too.”
