Donovan Dennie had dreams of leaving something behind for his family and he thought it best to leave his home-made speakers.

These speakers are literally a part of the house as he built them into the walls of the dwelling.

Dennis said that he started making speakers when he was in high school because he thought it was a great thing to do and it took a lot of skill.

Not having electricity in his hometown of Bowden Hill, St Andrew in his early years, Dennie was grateful when they finally got electricity and he could put his creation to use.

“Mi a do this is from school days. Mi never have any light up here and when light come mi decide me a go make everything,” he said.

He told THE WEEKEND STAR that his first attempt was building a shop, which he did, and his family is still making use of it.

CREATIONS GOT DESTROYED

The 58-year-old construction worker said the idea of building speakers inside the walls of his home came after one of his own creations got destroyed during a storm.

“Mi start by building my shop and then mi start build some speakers. Mi seh mi a go just build dem and if mi dead and mi son alive me a go just build them. That mean seh him nuh affi build no more speaker box. A the board box mi used to build the speakers in and mi used to build a concrete part for it to shelter it from the rain. But storm come and blow weh everything and me just seh mek mi build this inna concrete instead,” he said.

Dennie said that he did not expect to get any attention from building his speakers in this way, but after his creation was finished, he was getting a lot of praise for the work he did.

He said that he was very pleased with his handiwork and he feels appreciated when people tell him how wonderful his art is.

“I just make the speakers in my wall for myself. I didn’t do it to get work or anything like that. Everybody come and see it and seh that it looks nice. Even foreign people come and take pictures of it. Mi just feel good that I could come up with such a good idea and people love it,” he said.
