The Wailers Statue Project launch was held on Sunday, December 9th in Kingston, Jamaica. This was an all day affair which commenced with a forum on Rastafari and the Human Rights Commission. The statue unveiling ceremony began at 4 PM. Living legend and founding member of the Wailers, Bunny Wailer was on hand for the unveiling of the statue of Bob, Peter, & Bunny.
The statue was done by sculptor Paul Napier. The ceremony featured guest speaker Tunde Bewaji and open mic tributes. Kingsley Goodison also gave a moving tribute to the Wailers. This was followed by a musical tribute to the Wailers by way of live performances by Abijah Asadenaki Livingston (Naki) the son of Bunny Wailer, Dre Tosh, grandson of Peter Tosh, and Blvk Hero.
The trio shared the stage simultaneously backed by the Trench Town Right band. They took turns leading various hits from the Wailers catalog. The evening closed on a high note with Dre Tosh delivering an impromptu performance of his grandfather’s “Legalize It” after the audience called for an encore.
