At first glance, Daddy Yankee and Snow may not appear to have all that much in common. Yet when joined together, the música urbana superstar and the 1990s reggae crossover sensation have managed to make a promising chart hit.

A bilingual interpolation of Snow’s once ubiquitous hit “Informer,” their “Con Calma” collaboration enters the Billboard Hot 100 this week at No. 90, with a verse courtesy of the Canadian artist himself.  It marks his first appearance on the Hot 100 in more than 25 years, and his third single to chart there ever. Taken from 1993’s 12 Inches Of Snow album, “Informer” spent seven weeks atop the all-genre singles chart as part of a 25 week overall run, while the follow-up single “Girl, I’ve Been Hurt” reached No. 19 that June during a 17 week charting run.

In addition to its Hot 100 entry, “Con Calma” makes a strong debut on Hot Latin Songs at No. 6, his twentieth single ever to chart that high there. Impressively, it joins two more Daddy Yankee hits in the top ten, including “Adictiva” with Latin trap rapper Anuel AA, which arrives at a fresh peak at No. 10 after a dozen charting frames. “Despacito,” his massive hit single with Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber, spends Week 107 on Hot Latin Songs,  reliably positioned at No. 3.

Thanks to “Con Calma,” Yankee now boasts 11 total singles that have reached the Hot 100. He last appeared on the chart in autumn of 2018 as a featured artist on Janet Jackson’s single “Made For Now,” which peaked at No. 88, and before that with his solo hit “Dura,” a dancehall-tinged track that got to No. 43 back in May.

Part of the success of “Con Calma” comes from a corresponding social media driven dance challenge inspired by its engagingly choreographed music video, which incidentally has close to 60 million YouTube plays since premiering less than two weeks ago. Mass online participation of this sort has previously driven a number of singles onto and up through the Hot 100, including former Rae Sremmurd’s former chart-topper “Black Beatles” and the more recent hit “Envy Me” by Calboy. Not surprisingly, “Con Calma” enters the Latin Streaming Songs chart at No. 9 this week, an early indication of the challenge’s popularity.

Even with Yankee taking two new spots in the Hot Latin Songs top ten in addition to the “Despacito” stranglehold on No. 3, the chart remains occupied largely by familiar hits. After weeks firmly at the top, DJ Snake’s “Taki Taki” with Cardi B, Selena Gomez and Ozuna dips to No. 2, overtaken by Bad Bunny’s “MIA” with Drake. As was the case in the prior frame, the fourth and fifth spots go to Anuel AA’s “Ella Quiere Beber” and the Karol G team-up “Secreto.” Nudged downwards by “Con Calma,” Casper Mágico and Nio García’s “Te Boté” slips to No. 7, its lowest chart showing in months, while Pedro Capó’s “Calma” with Farruko and Los Ángeles Azules’ “Nunca Es Suficiente” shift to No. 8 and No. 9.

Thanks to its music video debut, Bad Bunny’s “Caro” jumps 12 spots from the prior week to reach a new peak at No. 14. Further down the chart, the DJ Luian and Mambo Kingz helmed “Bubalu” with Anuel AA, Becky G and Prince Royce continues its steady climb, notching up one slot to No. 23. Coming right behind is Ozuna’s “Baila Baila Baila” at No. 24, its highest placement yet in its four charting frames. Also worth watching, Becky G’s “Cuando Te Bese” with Paulo Londra takes No. 30, a 16 week peak.F
