Often-sedate Toronto city hall echoed Friday morning with the sounds of reggae music as the city officially declared Saturday “Titans of Reggae Day.”

Leroy Sibbles, Stranger Cole and other leading lights of Toronto’s legendary reggae scene received the proclamation from Mayor John Tory and then moved to a room for singing and dancing.

Rooted in the Eglinton West neighborhood, the scene flowered in the 1970’s after a wave of newcomers arrived from Jamaica and the other Caribbean islands.

That history is being celebrated Saturday night with a “Titans of Reggae Day” concert at The Opera House on Queen St. E. featuring Sibbles, Cole, Jay Douglas and other stars.
