Hawkeye—
It’s been awhile since fans have heard from dancehall deejay Hawkeye, but the ‘Arrest Me Officer’ artiste says he is still holding on to his musical space.
“I’ve never stopped working over the years,” he told THE WEEKEND STAR. “But you know how the music business go. If you don’t have certain things in place, then you are at a disadvantage. But I am keeping on doing my thing,” he said.
Actually, for the past four years, he has been based at the studio of legendary producer Sly Dunbar, learning lots about the music business on various levels.
“I have been going to Sly’s studio every day. We have worked on a number of productions, two of which have been mixed and are ready, Jamaica Jamaica with Leba (Hibbert), and Who Dem A Romp With on the ‘Alkaline 9.1’ rhythm,” said the deejay, who was popular in the ’90’s.
Hawkeye, whose real name is Christopher Smith, joined the Main Street Crew in the ’90’s, performing in the international arena, individually and in combination with Red Rat and Goofy. In 1998, he maintained a high profile with Move and Arrest Me Officer. He also did Doin’ Our Thing with hip-hop artiste Phoebe One.
THE WEEKEND STAR caught up with Hawkeye at the recent musical tribute for veteran singer Bunny Brown, where he was perhaps the only dancehall artiste in his age group represented.
According to Hawkeye, he “had to be there”.
“Bunny Brown was a family person, and I admired that, because I am like that as well. I met him through Sly, and we did a couple shows together and a friendship formed. He was a great person,” he reminisced.
Regarding Brown’s passing, Hawkeye said: “Things happened so quickly. He left here healthy, or so we thought, and then we heard that he was sick. He came back to Jamaica, and it was obvious that he was sick. Soon after, we heard that he had passed. He will be missed,” Hawkeye said in the tribute to Brown
Despite the loss, Hawkeye said that the year started off on a positive note.
“January morning I got a call from General Degree to let me know that he had released a song with me and Chico called Dem Gal on his Warm Kingston rhythm. Then in February, another producer called to say that he had released a song for me, and the good thing is that they are both getting airplay,” he said.
