When deejay Blade Supnelse moved from New York City to Atlanta in 2014, he was aware the Georgia capital had a much smaller dancehall market. Five years later, he has no regrets.
Last year, his career gathered steam on the strength of his songs Tek Off and TWF which he says did well in the city’s dancehall circles. So well, that he was awarded Favorite Reggae Scene Artist at Da Reggae Awards there on February 23.
“Things have definitely picked up since I came here. The biggest (dancehall) artists are always passing through Atlanta,” said Blade Supnelse.
He has opened shows for several of those acts when they play Atlanta, including Agent Sasco, I Octane, Masicka and Ishawna.
Blade Supnelse credits Caribbean radio, as well as clubs such as Elegance and Red Hills Ballroom, for keeping dancehall in Atlanta’s spotlight.
Tek Off and TWF were released two years ago. Though they are on Blade Supnelse’s Self-Employed label, Tek Off is produced by Offshore Productions, while TWF is co-produced by Offshore/3MP Productions.
Born Chavanne Hyde in St. Ann, a scenic parish in rural north-east Jamaica, Blade Supnelse has lived in the United States for 10 years. He launched his recording career in New York six years ago with The Thirst is Real.
