British dancehall artists have always yearned to make a name in Jamaica. Acts like Papa Levi and Dominic did well there in the 1980’s, and Mettal is looking to do the same.
The London-born rapper was recently in Jamaica promoting Weh Me Want, a song that features hot deejay Spice. It is produced by Denzil Williams Jr., a Jamaican based in Sweden.
Mettal, whose parents are Jamaican, said it is only natural he collaborate with Jamaican acts given their influence on him.
“I listen to quite a bit of dancehall. I listen to Sizzla, for me he is the Godfather of the dancehall scene. I like Mavado, Munga (Honorable), Jah Vinci, Vybz Kartel and of course Spice,” said Mettal.
He added that, “This is my first dancehall project but it will not be my last. Beyond Spice who is an amazing artist, I have a track that will land soon with Jah Vinci and Sizzla.”
Murder is the title of that collaboration which is also produced by Williams for Sound Bank Music.
Following a dancehall trend, Mettal is into the theatrics, something that adds to the genre’s popularity. He wears a mask to conceal his features.
The British artist has always done well in Jamaica. During the 1980’s, Papa Levi, Dominic and Smiley Culture had major hits on Jamaican radio, thanks to Disc Jockeys like Barry “Barry G” Gordon.
Traditional reggae bands like Aswad and Steel Pulse, and lovers rock singer Maxi Priest, also had a solid fan base in Jamaica.
Mettal, who began recording last year, has roots in Trench Town and Ocho Rios.
