Against His Will, a pre-Me Too Movement play by Jamaican David Heron, returns to the stage on March 24 at The New Vibe Lounge in Long Island, New York.
Against His Will, which opened in Jamaica in 2000, focuses on a Jamaican man who accuses his female boss of sexually assaulting him. Its novel topic of reverse discrimination helped the play draw record audiences to theaters in Kingston and Montego Bay.
Heron directs the play’s remount. Its main actors are James Duke Walker, Hector Lincoln and Candice McKoy, supported by Gabrielle C. Archer, Kevin Elden, Fleurette Harris, Carlene Taylor, Stacy Ann Brissett and Jennifer J. Joseph.
According to Heron, there has been no considerable modification to Against His Will’s script in light of the Me Too Movement’s emergence two years ago.
“It has changed very little since our world premiere production in Jamaica years ago. I have updated some cultural references and tweaked some of the original Jamaican dialect to make the piece more accessible to non-Jamaican audiences, but outside of that it is essentially the same play it always was,” he said.
The play has been mounted in the US, Canada and Caribbean. Last September, it had a reading at Billie Holiday Theater in Brooklyn, New York.
The New Vibe Lounge is co-owned by Jamaicans Patrick Aitcheson and Dwayne Reynolds. It has hosted a number of dancehall artists including Christopher Martin, Spragga Benz and Wayne Wonder.
