Twenty years after he cut his first song, roots singer Fyah Harp has launched Can’t Quench, his debut album. He did so on March 29 at Ginger Bay Café in downtown Hollywood, Florida.
The Rastafarian vocalist performed two songs from the set, Bondage and African Queen, which drew enthusiastic response from a packed house.
Fyah Harp, who lives in Oregon, is pleased at finally getting his first album out. He said its songs reflect his Rastafarian lifestyle and commitment to organic reggae.
“It represents the roots, because without the roots the music wouldn’t serve any purpose,” he said.
The 13-song Can’t Quench is produced by Jon FX, a Florida-based Jamaican best known for his work with the platinum-selling rapper XXXtentacion. He has also worked with Sizzla and Ky-Mani Marley.
Fyah Harp said he first met Jon FX through a mutual friend seven years ago. Their initial recording sessions produced the songs Firm in This Gideon and Bondage, which are both on Can’t Quench.
Born David Somers, Fyah Harp is from Montego Bay. He began singing semi-professionally in the early 1990s at hotels in his hometown, and at beauty pageants, before moving to Jamaica’s capital Kingston where recording opportunities were greater.
It would not be until he moved to Florida in the late 1990’s that his recording career started. His first songs, One A Day and No Argument, were produced by Troyton Hinds for Troyton Music; they were followed by songs for various producers.
After leaving South Florida, Fyah Harp settled in Atlanta where he opened shows for artists such as Sizzla, Luciano, Queen Ifrica and Warrior King.
