Tony Anthony

Singer Tony Anthony, a leading figure in Canadian reggae for over 20 years, plans to release a new album this summer. The set will be a collection of classic songs he describes as personal favorites.

One of them, That Wonderful Sound, was originally done by Tom Jones in 1969. Anthony’s version, which he co-produced with Ifield Joseph, was released early this month for his Phylani Music label.

Anthony is tight-lipped about the other songs on the album which he has earmarked for an August release.

A Toronto resident since the early 1990’s, Anthony remembers his mother listening to Jones’ yearning delivery on That Wonderful Sound as a boy in St. Catherine, a rural parish in central Jamaica.

Recording a version has fulfilled a boyhood dream.

“Tom Jones was one of her favorite singers. That Wonderful Sound and the rest of his music was a staple in our house, and I sang all those songs with her,” Anthony said.

That Wonderful Sound was mixed and mastered at Heavy Beat Records in Fort Lauderdale by ace producer Willie Lindo and his son Kashief Lindo. They, along with Dean Fraser, are working with Anthony on his new project. That Wonderful Sound has now entered the Foundation Radio Network Top 30 Chart.

Anthony’s previous album, Live to The Fullest, was released in 2015. His first album, Million Chance, came out in 2010.

Million Chance won Canadian Reggae Awards for Best Album and Best Songwriter. It was also nominated for Best Reggae Album at the Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
