For most of his decade-long career, rapper Ja’roy has bounced between hip hop and dancehall. He sticks to that flavor with Flaunt That, his new song which features fellow rapper Tory Lanez and Jamaican deejay Honorebel.

The single is produced by Herbert Skillz, a Ugandan producer based in the United Kingdom.

Ja’roy credits Honorebel, a veteran of the South Florida hip hop/dancehall scene, for initiating the project.

“He gave me the hook with the track and wanted it to be my song,” he said. Eventually, Honorebel joined in so did Tory Lanez, a Canadian artiste with Caribbean roots.

Given its cross-genre feel, Ja’roy has high hopes of Flaunt That attracting a diverse demographic.

“Since we have American and Caribbean ties to this song, reaching both markets would be huge,” he said.

Ja’roy, whose real name is Jordan Weekes, was born in Maryland to Jamaican parents. His musical influences include Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Sean Paul and Elephant Man.

Those hip hop/dancehall leanings are reflected in some of his songs which include Friday Night and Rumors. The latter was done last year with deejay Iyara, a former member of Bounty Killer’s Alliance camp.

According to Ja’roy, “I would describe my sound as universal, anyone can listen to it.”

With the presence of Tory Lanez, who has worked with DJ Khaled and Drake, the jamming Flaunt That may be Ja’roy’s best chance so far to enter the pop charts.
