Deejay Scaramooch has fond memories of his years at Arrow’s recording studio, where he saw some of the biggest names in dancehall hang out and record. The sound he developed at that east Kingston institution can be heard on Intoxicated, a song he did with singer Ed Robinson.
The prolific Robinson also produced the single which hears Scaramooch going full-throttle, old school style. It’s a sound that has served him well since he began recording 25 years ago.
“I don’t feel my style has changed, I try to keep strong to my roots, and I believe that’s what the people want to hear…authentic music,” said Scaramooch.
Intoxicated was recorded last December and released one month later. Though he produces most of his songs, Scaramooch said he approached Robinson to direct, and partner with him on the single. The single is No.12 on the Foundation Radio Network Top 30 Chart.
Robinson’s reputation as a hit-maker in the Big Apple has helped Intoxicated make the dance and radio rounds in that region and given Texas-based Scaramooch a presence there.
For much of his career, Manchester-born Scaramooch (real name Leeroy Mitchell) has doubled as an artiste and producer for his Junk Yard Records. Observing countless recording sessions at Arrow’s and ‘deejaying’ on the Ace’s International sound system inspired him to assume dual roles. That resulted in the launch of his label which has released songs by Robinson, General Trees, Lady Saw and Yami Bolo.
“I feel I have more creative freedom to do things my way, with my vision,” he said.
Reggae Dance, the follow-up to Intoxicated, is released by Junk Yard Records.
