Mdeez —
BAHAMIAN singer Devon “Mdeez” Knight, scheduled to perform on Reggae Sumfest’s penultimate night, was stabbed to death following a traffic accident in his native country on Friday.
According to The Tribune, which quoted police reports, “around 7:00 pm two vehicles collided at the junction of Prince Charles Drive and Fox Hill Road. The two men, who were driving, became involved in an altercation which resulted in one of them being stabbed multiple times”.
Paramedics transported the injured man to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was later identified as Mdeez. A 32-year-old man is in custody in connection with the incident.
The singer’s death brings the total homicide figure in the Bahamas to 44.
Meanwhile, principal of Reggae Sumfest, Josef Bogdanovich has expressed shock and sadness at the death of the singer.
“I am extremely saddened by the loss of a talented musician in such a senseless act of violence. The Sumfest family wishes to let Mdeez’s family and other loved ones know that we share in their grief and deeply regret that he will not be performing at the festival,” said Bogdanovich in a statement to the Jamaica Observer.
“I followed up on his recommendation and looked at one of Mdeez’s videos. Impressed by his performance, I invited him to join the line-up for Festival Night 1. I was particularly happy to provide an opportunity for a Bahamian artiste with Jamaican roots, as it is my philosophy that it is our music that is the unifying element in our region,” Bogdanovich added.
Reggae Sumfest is slated to take place from July 14 to 20 at Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay, St James. Mdeez was booked to perform on July 19.
The late singer’s songs include Love Is, Bad Company, Times Hard and TKO.
