Hopeton Lindo has done the rounds as a singer/songwriter and producer since launching his career in the early 1980’s. He has enjoyed a resurgence in recent months, thanks to a renewed bond with some old friends.
Hard Ears and Let’s Party, two of his latest songs, were co-produced by the famed Taxi Gang of Sly and Robbie with One Pop Music in Kingston. The latter is a three-the-hard-way number with fellow singers Everton Blender and Anthony Malvo.
Both songs did well in South Florida and New York City, two of the more competitive reggae markets in the United States. Lindo, whose previous hit songs include Territory, takes this career bounce in stride.
“I am always here making good music, it’s just that sometimes a song gets more airplay than another, it’s just the nature of the business. I’ve had some recent success, as I continue putting in the work, staying focused and working with some of the best in the business,” he said.
“Some of the best” includes Freddie McGregor, whose Big Ship Music Fest Lindo performs on come July 6 in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Lindo, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, is one of contemporary reggae’s prolific songwriters. He was one of the primary composers at producer Gussie Clarke’s Music Works camp in the 1980’s and 1990’s, writing or co-writing some of that decade’s most popular hits.
Among those songs were Champion Lover by Deborahe Glasgow, Telephone Love by J C Lodge, Slow Down and Rough Neck (Gregory Isaacs and The Mighty Diamonds) and Isaacs’ classic ballad, Red Rose For Gregory.
For over 20 years, Lindo has lived in South Florida as an established figure on the region’s reggae scene. The success of Hard Ears and Let’s Party has re-ignited his passion for recording.
“My career is still unfolding and there’s a lot more to come,” he said.
