Environmental Lead Paint Nightmare Exposed in Broward County, Florida – 814 Unit Apartment Building
High concentrations of lead paint discovered in bathtubs of apartments occupied by minority communities of Jamaican and Haitian descent. The Rogatinsky and Matthews law firm, www.rogatinskylaw.com has filed a class action lawsuit against the owner of the Cypress Grove Apartments located at 4200 NW 19th Street, Lauderhill, Florida. The two class lawsuit addresse a public safety emergency affecting thousands of former and current tenants. The lead plaintiff is a two year old baby that has been poisoned by lead paint found in the bathtub that he was bathed in since he was born.
Local community radio host Michael Downer exposed the lead paint danger on his popular morning show on WZOP 92.7 FM. Downer said that this news needs to get out to the Jamaican and Haitian community in Lauderhill, Florida. The majority of the tenants are my people of Jamaican and Haitian decent. Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body, over months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems. Children younger than 6 years are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. The Rogatinsky and Matthews law firm conducted inspections and lead was detected in bathtubs throughout the apartment complex. Mr. Rogatinsky added, “Clients have told us that when a tenant moves out, a crew comes in and paints the entire bathtub to cover up the chipped surface. Instead of replacing these old lead infested tubs they are just covering it up and letting the next tenant get exposed.”
The Rogatinsky and Matthews law firm, along with the Levy Konigsberg law firm from New York are representing hundreds of clients who either live in the 814 units of Cypress Grove or have lived in Cypress Grove Apartments in the last two years. The first step is to get tested. Attorney Terrell Matthews said, “You need to take your children to their pediatrician and ask for a lead paint test to see what levels they have. According to the Center for Disease control, anything over 5 micrograms per deciliter is dangerous for children and they will need treatment.” Rogatinsky and Matthews has set up a hotline to answer questions for the residents and former residents of the Cypress Grove Apartments.
