Capleton—

‘A St Mary Mi Come From’, the charity event staged annually by deejay Capleton, will not be held this year, the organizers have confirmed.

Plans had been in place for the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) award-winning event to be held in November at its original home, St Mary, having moved to Kingston for the first time last year. However, after a review of certain key factors, the organizers say that they decided to reschedule the event.

They have cited the recent heavy rains which “have taken a huge toll on the roads” as one of the reasons for their decision to postpone the show. “We have also decided to reclaim our original August 5 date,” Capleton’s manager, Claudette Kemp, told The Gleaner, adding that plans had been advanced for this year’s staging, with promotional boards ready to be placed throughout the island.

A St Mary Mi Come From moved to Kingston in 2018, after its 2017 staging was flooded out due to heavy rainfall in St Mary. The move outside of the parish, Kemp said, did not sit well with some St Mary residents and, listening to the concerns, Capleton decided to take the charity event back to his roots.

The show was first held in 2000 at Clements Park as a giving-back event by Capleton to his parish. The dancehall deejay has continued the initiative annually, making donations to numerous schools and hospitals in and outside of the parish.

It was also revealed this week that biennial charity concert ‘Shaggy and Friends’ will not be held in January 2020, as expected. Shaggy was quoted as saying that his hectic schedule has prevented him from dedicating the time required to properly plan the event.

The concert raises funds to donate equipment and supplies to the Bustamante Hospital for Children. Some 100 million dollars was raised at the 2018 staging.
