Live albums have become a rarity but gospel singer Derrick Scott wanted fans to hear him at his spontaneous best for Mission Ablaze Live, his fourth album, scheduled for release on November 16.
The 13-song set will be launched at Unity New Testament Church of God in Fort Lauderdale where Scott is a member. It is also where the album was recorded one year ago.
It contains several of the songs from Scott’s previous albums — Some Preacher Nowadays, On A Mission and Gospel Truth.
“I always wanted to do a live album, it gives people a feel of what I sound like in concert. This is me really bringing my music to the people,” said Scott.
He added that there is little difference to the recorded versions, even though “I go a little longer on some of the songs.”
Among the songs on Mission Ablaze Live is Since I Met You Jesus, a gospel take on blues singer Ivory Joe Hunter’s classic Since I Met You Baby. Scott also does a rendition of There Is No Secret, a gospel standard.
Scott was backed at the 2018 show by the Mission Band, a seven-piece band that comprised musicians from various churches in South Florida. He produced Mission Ablaze Live with the assistance of Willie Lindo, the famed musician/producer who collaborated with Scott on Gospel Truth.
The Fort Lauderdale-based Scott is originally from Linstead, a bustling market town in rural St. Catherine parish, Jamaica. He is the younger brother of singer Freddie McKay, best known for the hit songs, Picture on The Wall and Dance Dis Ya Festival.
He followed his brother’s path into music, performing as a deejay on sound systems in Jamaica. Migrating to South Florida 25 years ago, Scott converted to Christianity and released a number of songs including Weeping & Wailing and Preacher Nowadays.
