IT has been a quiet year for Jamaican singjay Lazimba, but the German-based artist belatedly kicked off his 2019 campaign on October 18 with Live to Love Ya, a dance song that is a departure from his previous work. It is a collaboration with German singer Stavros Vamvakidis.

Lazimba, who lives in Munich, and Vamvakidis are business partners. The song is produced by SV Studios.

Live to Love Ya is a departure from songs like Boom Draw and Reggae Music, two of Lazimba’s earlier singles which have a hardcore roots-reggae feel. His latest track hears him and Vamvakidis rocking to a hip hop beat.

According to Kingston-born Lazimba, he is looking to broaden his appeal.

“I definitely think about different markets like South America, Germany of course, especially my city Munich. Most definitely, I have to think about the Jamaican market and by extension the Caribbean,” he said.

Lazimba was born Leighton Orlando Brown, and began recording in Jamaica almost 20 years ago. Searching for greater career opportunities, he moved to Germany 10 years ago and settled in Munich, a city with a diverse music scene.

“Music brought me to Germany actually. In 2006, when I came to Europe for the first time, I was touring through Germany with my former band Aluta Continua. Thereafter, I got the opportunity to live and work here and I took it,” he explained.

Live to Love Ya is one of the songs earmarked for Lazimba’s forthcoming EP which he expects to be released this year. He said it will be “a good mix of reggae, dancehall and hip hop.”
