Foolish Advice, an independent movie written and directed by Jamaican Stavan Whyte, continues its South Florida run on November 24 at the Royal Palm Beach Cultural Center in Palm Beach.
The film, which features an all-Jamaican cast, premiered September 22 at Tradition Town Hall in Port St Lucie, Florida. It is inspired by the Old Testament story of Homer and his wife, Gomer, a prostitute.
Whyte plays the lead role of Jonathan, who is in a troubled marriage with Suzie, played by Sandra Chin. He said Foolish Advice got strong support from the Jamaican community in Port St Lucie and is expecting a similar reception in Palm Beach.
“They can expect a thought-provoking film with a deep message that will strengthen marriages. It’s funny, sad; just a mix of emotions,” he told the OBSERVER ONLINE.
Foolish Advice is Whyte’s first film. He and his wife Zaina put up most of the US$10,000 to produce the drama which was filmed over two years in Palm Bay, Port St Lucie and Miami.
An ordained minister of religion, Whyte has written and produced plays such as God Ova Obeah. He won the Festival Song Contest in Jamaica in 2003 and 2004 with Jamaican Tour Guide and Ole Time Jamaica.
Whyte plans to show Foolish Advice in South Florida for the rest of this year. He is hoping to take the movie to New York in 2020 and play it in West Indian communities.
