Rita Marley—

Rita Marley, wife of reggae icon Bob Marley, is now a citizen of Ghana. According to pulse.com/ gh, Marley was one of 126 Africans in the Diaspora conferred with the honor by President Nana Akufo- Addo last Wednesday.

The ceremony was held at Golden Jubilee House, the presidential palace in Accra. In a Facebook post, President Akufo urged all the persons conferred with Ghanaian citizenship to respect and abide by the laws of the country.

“On Wednesday, 27th November, 2019, I conferred Ghanaian citizenship on 126 of our kith and kin from the African Diaspora, who have lived with us for many, many years,” Akufo-Addo was quoted as writing.

“The ceremony is part of the series of activities commemorating the ‘Year of Return’. I urged them to respect and abide by the laws of Ghana; live in accordance with the tenets of Ghana’s Constitution; and guard jealously our country’s image,” he continued.

Marley’s connection with Ghana dates back more than a decade. Through her foundation, she has been involved in projects including rehabilitating old school blocks and building new ones, she also supports the children by providing lunches for primary school children to supplement their nutrition, and through scholarships.

She is currently confined to a wheelchair. Ghana, officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the subregion of West Africa.
