Sunshine is the new song from Mikey Spice, produced by Michael Stewart for his Tell Dem Music label. Released in December, it is the second single from a series of recording sessions between the singer and Florida-based Stewart.
Energy was the first song that was released from those collaborations.
Known in music circles as Mikey Shine, Stewart has been producing songs for over 30 years. He believes Sunshine has a glow that reggae fans want to feel.
“It’s good music an’ a lotta people feel they are not getting good music nowadays. We have some good musicians on this project an’ Mikey Spice delivers on vocals,” said Stewart.
Guitarist Duwayne Hoilett, bassist Dave Richards and Christopher Meredith (of Stephen Marley’s band) on keyboards played on Sunshine.
A graduate of Jamaica’s tourist circuit, Mikey Spice had a breakthrough hit in the mid-1990’s with his reggae cover of Barry White’s sultry Practice What You Preach. Some of his other hits include Grab Yuh Lass (with Louie Culture) and I Am I Said, a cover of the Neil Diamond classic.
The husky-voiced Spice retains a loyal following in South Florida, New York and Atlanta. Though his sessions with Tell Dem Music yielded a number of songs, Stewart is not ready to release a full project as yet.
“Wi not looking at putting out a album right now. Just some singles to tease the market,” he said.
Stewart is originally from Manchester, a farm belt parish in south-central Jamaica. He has lived in the United States for over 40 years, first in New York City then South Florida.
Over the years, several of reggae’s biggest acts have recorded songs for Tell Dem Music, including, Marcia Griffiths and Tinga Stewart.
