It’s been a tough time for Jamaican men in recent months. Many have been involved in domestic incidents, some resulting in the deaths of their spouses.
On her latest song, My Caribbean Boy, singer Tanice Morrison hails the “good men” who have been overlooked due to the misdeeds of some bad apples.
“I think men are always projected in a negative light and those who are trying to make it right are being overshadowed by that notion. I am sure some women would agree that not all men are ‘cut from the same fabric’ and deserve to be celebrated and respected, so as long as they treat women with the same level of respect,” she explained.
Released in December, My Caribbean Boy is written by Morrison, who also co-produced the single with Demar Gayle of Raging Fyah.
The song’s Afro-dance pop flavor is a change of pace for Morrison, who began recording as a teenager in 1997. Most of her previous songs, including Let it Flow and Dance The Night Away, were done to lovers rock rhythms.
“When I think of music, I never see boundaries. Music is an important form of human expression and as such I feel that experimenting with different sounds or musical styles allows one to discover things and grow musically. One could say for instance, it is through experimenting that artistes/musicians such as The Beatles and Bob Marley remain relevant,” she said.
To date, Morrison has released one album, 2010’s No Limitations. She has also toured as a harmony singer with Richie Spice and Dwight Pinkney.
My Caribbean Boy is lead single from her EP, scheduled for release this year.
