Thirteen years ago when singer Nardia Rose returned to New York City, her career was making encouraging strides. But she decided to break from the business and start a family.
The urge to make a comeback was always in the air and she did just that recently as Nrozae with a cover of Modern Girl, a song originally done by singer Courtney Melody in 1986. It is produced by Omarion Banga.
“My executive producer Sharmelle John aka Diamond Queen was the genius who came up with the idea to cover Modern Girl. She is smart and very knowledgeable about music, and knew the song and somehow felt I had the right vocals to bring a 2020 type of a musical vibe that would light up the track. It took me a minute to get on board but once I committed to the project I was all in,” said Nrozae.
Though born in New York City, Nrozae was raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Ground Zero for dancehall music. With her father (trumpeter Patrick Flemming) being a musician, different genres were played in her home and one of the songs she heard was Modern Girl, written and produced by Robert Ffrench.
She agreed that if her version was to make an impact, it needed a contemporary feel.
“Sharmelle and I agreed we wanted a more modern track with the original lyrics with a twist…more like merging the old with the new. At first, we were thinking I should say, ‘I need a modern man,’ but it just made sense to just stick with ‘I am a modern girl,” she explained. “Given all the strides women have made in society this is really the perfect song for 2020.”
As Nardia Rose, Nrozae’s brightest moments came with the songs Real Hot Gal and If You Wanna Dance. She has no regrets about stepping back from the music business when things were going good.
“When I started in the industry, I was young and really did not have much knowledge about life and music. I knew I had a great voice and just wanted to sing. Today, I have matured a lot and also more knowledgeable about the industry,” she said. Reply Reply All Forward
