Dennis Brown—

Reggae Sunsplash will honor the ‘crown prince of reggae’, Dennis Brown, at its return staging in November 2020.

The announcement was made by the organizers of the show in a news release on Friday.

Tyrone Wilson

Executive Producer for Reggae Sunsplash Tyrone Wilson stated, “It was a no brainer decision to honor the crown prince of reggae Dennis Brown at this year’s staging of Reggae Sunsplash. Part of this historical return is to ensure we honor the greatness of Reggae Sunsplash and its impact on the world of reggae music festivals. Dennis Brown’s music advocated for a new way to live through love and unity. He was unquestionably a favorite on the Reggae Sunsplash stage for attendees and also his musical peers who joined in his performances many times.”

The reggae icon first performed on the Reggae Sunsplash stage in June 1978, the festival’s first staging in Jarrett Park Montego bay, alongside Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Inner Circle and Third World.

“We are honored to have the support of the Dennis Brown Estate headed by his wife, Mrs Yvonne Brown and the Brown family who will be present at the festival and will play a significant role in the tribute,” Wilson said.

Set to take place on November 7, 2020, night 2 of the show, the musical tribute will feature the daughter and son of Dennis Brown, Marla Brown and Dennis Brown Jnr as well as select Jamaican acts.

Yvonne Brown noted  “It is a great pleasure to be in attendance and accept this invitation to honor my Late Husband Dennis Brown. It’s with hard work and a humble heart that your work will never go unrecognized. Dennis’s highlight of his career was always performing at Reggae Sunsplash and it’s overwhelming to know that his love for the people and his music both have been a gift to be remembered throughout the generations. Thank you for keeping Dennis’s music and memory alive”.
