For his latest project, Soul Reggae Again, producer Garfield Cowan called on some of Jamaica’s leading musicians to enhance songs he first recorded almost 10 years ago.
A 13-track set, Soul Reggae Again contains songs by Wayne Wonder, Christopher Martin, Busy Signal, Jah Mason and Alva. It is scheduled for release on April 17 by VPAL Music.
Cowan, who is based in South Florida, brought in some top ‘surgeons’ to breathe new life into songs first released in 2013’on his Soul Reggae rhythm.
“I don’t always revisit my rhythms but after I did the Sweet Personality rhythm which was live and featured the likes of Jah Cure with over 10 million views and was on VP Records’ Strictly The Best (compilation album), I decided to revisit some of my works I did in the past, which I am happy I did,” Cowan explained.
Guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith, one of the most recorded musicians in reggae, and saxophonist Dean Fraser, played on the updated Soul Reggae beat. So did the emerging Notis Heavyweight Rockaz duo of Unga Barunga on drums and Welch on bass.
“I chose the musicians because I wanted some of the best in the business to get the best sound. Adding live instruments has improved the songs tremendously,” said Cowan.
I’ve Made my Choice by Alva, Wayne Wonder’s NGSG, Jah Mason (Be With You), Christopher Martin (Change me Plan) and Busy Signal’s You And Me are some of the songs on Soul Reggae Again.
Cowan is originally from St. Ann, a rural parish on Jamaica’s North coast. He has been a producer for over 10 years; his most successful venture has been the Sweet Personality rhythm which was also released in 2013.
That beat yielded two sizable hits in Wayne Wonder’s Let Me Love You Tonight and Wake Up by Jah Cure.
