Buju Banton—

Grammy-winning reggae artiste Buju Banton has made it clear that despite his immense musical contributions, he does not consider himself a legend of the genre.

“It’s not a legendary thing. A lot of great men have come along and done what I’ve done, and all they have done is speak the truth from a place of peace, a place that can resonate with people internally; on the same frequency spiritually,” the entertainer said during a recent interview with Apple music’s Shabbaaaaa Sound Radio show.

“I’m a servant, here to serve the masses and as a servant, I am subjected to them and what they require from Buju Banton. They want the truth and only the truth, so we give them it from a pure place, a place of peace that can resonate with them,” he said. “I’m not a legend, I’m not a superhuman. I don’t like dem f**kery deh weh dem try put on pan the yutes dem. Next thing yuh know, the yutes dem a worship some guy with a microphone in dem hand dat turn out to be dem worst nightmare. I’m not one of those dudes. I’m a rebel, make no mistake, but I’m not a legend.”

Speaking of being a rebel, Banton went on further in the interview to lament that although he was the one locked away behind bars, he has returned to a life of freedom, only to realise those on the outside may have been the ones imprisoned all along.

“Yes, I’ve been in prison, that’s no f**king secret, but I’ve come out of prison and find a nation of people sleeping, so who has been in prison?” he questioned. “The reality is, I knew where I was and I know where I am, but I’m realizing that the world is in a bigger prison.”

He used the interview to urge people to wake up and wise up. He outlined reconnecting with a ‘higher power’ as one solution to the problem.

“They have taken away the connection that we have to the higher power. They’re trying to block it. We have to reconnect. And when we reconnect, everything becomes seamless,” he said.
