Layla Ruhle

Since launching her recording career three years ago, Layla Ruhle has tried to establish herself as a singer, songwriter and producer. The Jamaican artist continues that quest with Get Away, her latest song which was released in March.
Significantly, it is her first reggae single.
Though only 20 years-old, Ruhle enjoys making music the old-school way.
“Sometimes I start off with making the beat, whereas other times I write the lyrics first. I also co-produce at times or sing over wicked beats from other producers. Writing is an outlet for me which I particularly enjoy and is very therapeutic,” she related. “Sometimes I write about personal experiences, and other times I write about things I see in society that really make me sit up and say to myself, ‘Why?’ or ‘Why is this still happening?’. I believe a true artist must always reflect the times.”

Get Away is a departure from Rhule’s previous songs which includes the pop-inspired Let’s Talk About It, Aftereffects and You Deserve That Oscar.
For her latest project, it was time to go back to the roots.
“Well, this is my first time releasing a reggae record. I’ve recorded other reggae songs, but you’ll have to wait and see what comes next and when I release them,” she said.
Strongly influenced by Alicia Keys, Layla Ruhle began playing piano at age seven. She counts two other American superstars for inspiring her direction and sound.
“I would also say Mariah Carey was my biggest influence in terms of singing as well as Toni Braxton. I loved Mariah’s high notes that I tried to imitate and Toni Braxton’s deep sultry voice. They are opposites technically, but that really helped my develop my style and vocal range,” said Rhule.
