Dancehall music has a reputation for being xxx-rated. And some of the most bawdy entertainers have been women — Lady Saw, Macka Diamond and Spice.
Gabeana has joined the ranks of shock deejays. Currently promoting Hot Gal, her new song, she defends her preference for being outrageous over the conventional.
“I could agree that some of my songs are graphic and somewhat shocking based on what few of my fans are used to.
I do enjoy making this type of music because it is real and I enjoy the reaction I get from persons who support me,” she said.
Among those supporting Gabeana is Urban Team Records, producers of Hot Gal. That company also produced her previous songs, Goldmine and BFF.
Like Lady Saw and Spice, Gabeana is from rural Jamaica. She hails from Middleton, a remote community in the country’s scenic Blue Mountains.
Musically active since she was six years-old, her recording career started with the risque Goldmine, followed by BFF.
The 22 year-old artist’s influences include Lady Saw, who converted to Christianity five years ago; Lady G, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt and “all the Marleys.”
