Singer Young Garvey is among the millions of people outraged by the murder of George Floyd in the United States on May 25. But having lived in that country for many years, he saw the incident as just another black man being killed by white police officers.
He wails against this longstanding oppression in One More Sad Song, which was released in June while Floyd’s death was still being protested globally by groups like Black Lives Matter. The single is produced by Leroy Sibbles.
“This song was written by me due to the constant killing of the black man in the United States of America by the police force. George Floyd was the ice-breaker for the world to see and come together to fight against injustice,” said Young Garvey. “To me, being black and living in the United States, being racially profiled, is a must as the system is designed to target blacks.”
Born Fabian Findley in Kingston, Young Garvey says early exposure to the teachings of Pan African giant Marcus Garvey inspired his moniker
One More Sad Song is his second production for Sibbles, former member of The Heptones. The first, Cool Natty, was released last year.
The four police officers involved in Floyd’s death have been charged. David Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, causing him to suffocate, was charged with second degree murder.
Floyd, 45, was accosted by the police in Minneapolis for allegedly using counterfeit money.
Young Garvey migrated to the United States in his late teens, and lived in New York City for nearly 20 years. In 2013, his first song, Grow Mi Hair, was released by the Natural Enterprise label.
Up And Active, his debut album, was released two years ago by One Nation Music and Japka Productions.
