Known in Jamaican music circles as a harmony singer, Elise Dash steps out front for the first time on Everything I Wanted, a cover of the hit song by Billie Eilish.

Recently released, her version has a similar sound to the original but carries a reggae feel The Police, circa 1980’s. It was Dash’s idea to cover the song which she heard on the radio and its lyrics instantly hit close home.

“So, I thought, ‘let me try something and see what I can do with this’. Then, I approached Steven Ventura, a close producer I had worked with in the past and he immediately got to work. He’s amazing with what he did with the track,” Dash said.

Ventura made his name in dancehall circles during the 1990’s working with acts like Beenie Man and Elephant Man.

Released last November, Eilish’s house version peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Taken from her hit album, When we All Fall Asleep, Where do we Go?, Everything I Wanted is inspired by Eilish’s battle with depression.

Written by her brother, it maintained the American singer’s rise as an exciting talent.

Dash is among her legions of admirers.

“Billie Eilish is great. I love her lyrics and her style and I hope my interpretation did her justice,” she said.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, Dash is a trained vocalist and pianist who grew up listening to a diverse crop of artists such as Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Lauryn Hill. Most of her recording until now has been as a backing vocalist for “upcoming artists”.

“This is my first single that has been released so I’m really excited about it. I’ve been doing music my whole life though. When I was younger I used to record and release instrumentals on YouTube,” she said.
