As a rule, Lloyd Lovindeer has avoided political songs throughout his career, but the tenure of Donald Trump as US president forced him to make a change.
Lady Liberty is the title of the veteran satirist’s new song. It takes a crack at the Trump administration’s aggression towards immigrants, many of them from Muslim countries.
Lovindeer wrote and produced Lady Liberty with the assistance of longtime collaborator Sydney Thorpe on keyboards, and guitarist Danny Browne.
“I was watching American news sometime ago and I saw a politician refer to immigrants as ‘people from SHIT HOLE COUNTRIES’. He made it clear that he was talking about black and brown people. But how can you disrespect immigrants like that when everyone in America is either an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants living on captured land?” Lovindeer asked.
Trump allegedly made the disparaging remark two years ago during a meeting with senior aides at the White House. According to media reports, he wondered why so many immigrants were coming from Africa Latin America, and not European countries like Norway.
The alleged statement caused international furore and inspired Lovindeer to take a stance.
“Immigrants have made significant contribution to the development of America, so I decided to do a song which I hope will make that politician see them as such,” he said.
Lovindeer has made a name putting a humorous spin on devastating events such as Hurricane Gilbert (Wild Gilbert) and religious hypocrisy (One Day Christian). His aversion to politics has changed in the era of Trump.
“Over the past four years I have tried to keep up with American politics because a lot of what is happening there now affects us here (in Jamaica) so we have to be aware of these happenings and be prepared to adjust,” he said.
