Many songwriters are inspired by the times they live in — and the time they arise from their slumber. Var experienced an early morning burst in April last year that resulted in Revolution, one of the songs from his EP, Jah Love.
“What I remembered about the song is the melody woke me up from my sleep about 5 am, so I took up the guitar and started singing the song until my brethren came and asked if I release this song already, and I said no. So, he set up the microphone and we did a recording of the song,” Var recalled.
After they finished recording, came news that the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris had been destroyed by fire.
“We paused for a moment. This was Monday, April 15, 2019. I will never forget,” said Var.
Revolution is scheduled for independent release on November 13, one month ahead of the acoustic-strong Jah Love. The EP has six songs including the title, with Var writing all and producing four of them.
A graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Var is from the lush Rio Grande region of Portland parish in eastern Jamaica.
He is the former lead singer and chief songwriter of Pentateuch. His colleagues in that band also attended ‘Edna’ which has produced several in-demand musicians.
Despite the Coronavirus surge, Var says he never stops writing songs.
“As an artist we still have to create and be productive despite the economic situation. I have music flowing through my veins so I have to find a way to get it out and if I can’t do it with big production I will do it to the best of my ability with what I have,” he stated. “I still think some of the best music is created with very little; it is not what you have that makes good music, it is the vibration and energy that you put in what you have.”
