Dancehall fans from the 1990’s readily identify Wormbass as the energetic leader of the Blaze band, which backed Beenie Man for close to a decade.
However, the lanky bassist has never allowed himself to be limited to one genre which he proves on Follow You, his latest song.
He co-wrote the self-produced Afrobeat single with Geddys Chase Ferguson. He thinks every serious musician should embrace diversity.
“It is always important for musicians to connect with these emerging genres as a means to reach new audiences. The experience that I have acquired during my career has taught me that nothing is new under the sun and these trends are indeed rooted in African culture,” he said. “I consider it my duty to not only stay in tune with these genres but to help their growth.”
The dreadlocked artist played bass on Follow You, accompanied by Sly Dunbar on drums, guitarist Matthew Jacquette and beatmaker Kemar “Khemis” Campbell of Vybnation Records.
The song is Wormbass’ first crack at Afrobeat, a sound with roots in Nigeria, which has taken the pop world by storm in the past three years thanks to acts like Burna Boy and Davido.
Wormbass was born Delroy Niven in St. Thomas, a rural parish in eastern Jamaica that has produced a number of top reggae/dancehall acts including Bushman and Popcaan. Prior to joining Blaze, he did a stint with a band in Cancun, Mexico with the Original Heat Band.
In recent times, he has toured Europe with roots singer Winston McAnuff and the Inna De Yard group. Four years ago, he released Reggaeman, his first album.
This year, he released the song, Royalty.
