He may be Brooklyn, New York-born but Reuben Shaw revels in his Jamaican heritage. He never misses an opportunity to show off the culture of his parents’ homeland, which he does on Winning.
The song is scheduled for release on February 12. Produced by DJ Big Dee, it is among a clutch of singles the rapper has on the market, starting with Aliens which was released in January.
Winning hears Shaw rocking the mic in patois, the Jamaican tongue.
“I am Jamaican whether I was born in Brooklyn or Kingston. My mother and my father come from yard; my Dad is from Kingston and my mother was born in Spanish Town, so patois is my natural dialect,” he said. “We were born in the States and so we adopted the dialect of Americans through our peers, not our family. Our Jamaican heritage is what keeps us in order so acknowledging it to me is of the utmost importance, but in regards to the song that’s just the way God made the message come out!”
Aliens officially launched his solo music career. Shaw has etched a solid resume as an actor, appearing in hit movies like Barber Shop 3 and the popular television crime series, ATL Homicide.
He got into acting in 2011 through a family friend while living in Atlanta, starting as a production assistant on The Monique Show. While he loves acting, music is part of his DNA; he is the grandson of singer Denroy Morgan, best known for the 1981 hit song, I’ll do Anything for You.
That makes him the nephew of Morgan Heritage members Gramps, Una, Peetah and Lukes.
After DJ Big Dee played him the track for a potential song, Shaw knew he had the perfect theme for it.
“We are all Winning! Jamaica is winning…don’t make them tell you anything else. I was hooked up with the beat by my boy DJ Big Dee and his label Next 2 Blow Records in Atlanta in late 2019. We connected by promoting some shows working for Atlanta Comedy Theatre and once he gave me the track I took it to my home studio and just went off,” he explained.
Bandz, a Rhythm And Blues ballad, is another of Reuben Shaw’s songs to be released this week. It drops on January 11.
