It’s Valentine’s Day! And what better way to show appreciation for the ladies with a song like Speak To A Girl, done by Canada-based singers Tony Anthony and Ammoye.
Released on February 2, it is a reggae cover of the 2017 hit single by country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. It is self-produced for Anthony’s Phylani Music label.
The Toronto-based Anthony never knew of the song until late last year when he was returning from an early-morning airport trip and heard it playing on the radio. Its lyrics hit home and he immediately reached out to musician Osborne “Ifield” Joseph and Ammoye to work on his version.
“I believe the lyrics in this song is one of the main reasons I was drawn to it from the beginning. These are the topics I have had in conversations with my daughter. We spoke about her happiness being as important as her partner’s,” he explained. “I believe in Karma and I have always said I would not do anything to a woman that I would not like anyone to do to my daughter or any other female members of my family. So, I try hard to be honest.”
Ammoye, who like Anthony lives in Toronto, was also gripped by Speak to a Girl’s message of respect for women. She was on board once he asked her to sing Hill’s part.
“In a climate and time where unfortunately domestic abuse and physical abuse towards women and girls is so high, when Tony approached me about collaborating with him on Speak to A Girl, I felt a strong need to stand with him and lend my voice to not just a beautiful song but a vital, important and strong message,” she said.
Joseph, who is from Dominica, played all instruments on the song.
Anthony, who is originally from St. Catherine parish in Jamaica, has been one of the Toronto reggae scene’s top acts for many years. Last year, he released the album Then Now & Forever which featured his cover of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes’ classic, Wake up Everybody.
