George Nooks—

Veteran singer George Nooks was in good spirits when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court in Half-Way Tree yesterday.

He will return to court on July 27, when his trial relating to the charge of possession of cocaine and perverting the course of justice, is slated to begin. Speaking to THE WEEKEND STAR after the hearing, Nooks expressed satisfaction with the way the case was being handled.

“I’m feeling great and looking forward to this being over,” he said.

In October 2020, Nooks was charged by the narcotics police following a ruling by the director of public prosecutions in relation to an incident which occurred in April 2019. Allegations are that Nooks tossed a plastic bag containing a “white powdery” substance to the ground when police officers conducting a narcotics operation approached him.

Nooks was taken into custody and it is further alleged that while being processed at the narcotics headquarters, he got hold of the bag and swallowed the contents.

‘GOD IS GOOD’

“Me nah watch dem,” Nooks said, “because all the time, God is good, and God is good all the time, (so) no trial is too difficult.”

He remains optimistic as he prepares to release a 14-track album later this year.

“The title has been changed a couple times but with Tads Records, an appropriate one will be found and then we can announce an official date,” Nooks said.

This is not the veteran singer’s first time facing the court on drug-related charges. He was found not guilty in a separate case of breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act in May 2019.

Meanwhile, the case involving fellow entertainer Quada was put off for mention again when he appeared in the same court on Thursday. Quada is charged with arson and murder.

Though he was not familiar with Quada’s case, Nooks said “a just so dem ting set”.

“The artiste should ride out the storm … all the entertainers in these situations should not give up hope; all my brothers and sisters, ride out your storms,” he said.
