The sentencing of Mavado’s son, Dantay Brooks, in the Home Circuit Court, has been adjourned until next week Friday, March 19.

Brooks was convicted of murder, illegal possession of firearm, and arson earlier this year and faces the possibility of life in prison.

Brooks’ lawyer, Peter Champagnie, asked the court for time to look over the social enquiry report, which he indicated he had only received on the day of the court appearance, as well as settle matters related to the victim impact statement.

Asked by the Jamaica Observer what sort of mitigating circumstances may weigh in the teenager’s favor, Brooks’ co-counsel Tamika Harris responded: “His age, and the fact that he was not the trigger person. (Next) Friday, all will be revealed.”

Brooks and his co-accused Andre Hinds were found guilty on January 27 of the 2018 murder of Lorenzo Thomas in the St Andrew community of Cassava Piece, illegal possession of firearm, and arson. They face the possibility of a life sentence in prison.

In the meantime, Mavado is dealing with the death of his mother, Elizabeth “Ms Pinny” Gordon. She died in a hospital in Kingston on Thursday night.

Mavado reportedly had a great relationship with his mother.

On Mother’s Day in 2018 Mavado shared an old photo with Gordon saying that it reminded him of the great things she did for him and added: “So this world could talk about me today. Only father God knows, that’s why I will always love you mama, my boss.”

Several dancehall entertainers have lost their mothers over the last nine months, including Shabba Ranks, who lost his mother last month; Black Queen, who lost his mother in January 2021; Beenie Man, who lost his mom in September 2020; and Shenseea, who lost her mother in June 2020. Professional dancer Dancing Rebel also lost her mother in October 2020.
