Got To BTough by Toots And The Maytals won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday. Released last August by Trojan BMG Records, it was a sentimental favorite to give the legendary group their second win in the category, following the death of its leader Toots Hibbert in September. Hibbert, who founded the group as a trio in Kingston, Jamaica during the early 1960’s, died from the Coronavirus at age 77.
Rad Bryan, longtime guitarist for The Maytals, was not surprised at the victory. “There were a lot of pointers, with him being a legend and it’s a quality album. It means a lot for us as musicians who helped him along his journey,” said Bryan. Toots and The Maytals first won the Grammy Award in 2005 for True Love.
Hibbert had a storied career. He won the Festival Song Contest in Jamaica three times with Bam Bam, Sweet And Dandy and Pomps And Pride. He also wrote a number of classic songs like Pressure Drop, Funky Kingston and Daddy which are pop standards. The other nominees for Best Reggae Album were Higher Place by Skip Marley, One World by The Wailers, Upside Down 2020 (Buju Banton) and It All Comes Back To Love (Maxi Priest).
