Having a hot rhythm is important to dancehall producers as flour is to a baker. ZJ Dymond can attest to that, having kicked off his career as a music producer 10 years ago. In February, Force, the latest production from his Full Chaarge Records was released. It is a collaboration between Vybz Kartel and Sikka Rhymes.
ZJ Dymond is also a sound system selector and radio disc jockey, which makes his knowledge of what fans want to hear in a beat even more credible. “The ingredients of a great rhythm starts with your direction, what yuh want to get from this beat whether it be reggae or dancehall. What direction yuh want it take di artiste so when it goes out there it have that effect to become a hit,” he explained. “Most of the time yuh creative juices flow whether you are in di studio creating a beat, whether yuh doing it by yourself or sitting down with a beat maker.” The Zip 103 FM DJ started out playing parties before getting big assignments as an in-house selector at Margaritaville in Montego Bay and Grand Cayman. Then, he went into production.
Full Chaarge Records has produced songs such as Body Feel Good by Vershon, Party Tonight by DeMarco and Govana’s Yuh Can Wuk.Two of the label’s biggest hits are by the controversial Kartel who is currently serving a life sentence in Jamaica for murder. Those songs are Pretty Position (Backas) and Straight And Narrow. ZJ Dymond said he and Kartel have similar ideas when it comes to breaking emerging artists, like Sikka Rhymes.“Kartel is always a person who like to help young acts and I’m also a person who love that in di industry,” he said.
