For over five decades, Jamaicans have had a love affair with American country music. However, there have not been any country artists coming out of reggae land. That changed last year with the emergence of Wesrok, a singer who blends both sounds. Look At Me Now will be released April 23, by 360 Global Entertainment Company Ltd., it contains Looking Back, which marked his debut last May and its follow-up, Poor Country Boy.
Describing the seven-song EP as “good inspirational music”, Wesrok admits a country artist in Jamaica can be a hard sell. But he is optimistic about carving a niche. “It’s a fusion of country and reggae which is not really popular around but I am hoping that people will be inspired and motivated,” he said. Wesrok is currently promoting the single, Born As A Winner.
“This song was done to inspire people, especially those who are from
a poor background who oftentimes get frustrated by the lack of resources,
but if they persist continuously they can be victorious and become
winners,” he said. A former police officer, Wesrok grew up in rural Jamaica listening to Charlie Pride, Kenny Rogers and Marty Robbins, singers who represented the diversity of country music. Those are also three of the most popular country artists in Jamaica.
