Up-and-coming entertainer Milton Wray has urged embattled politician George Wright not to heed calls to resign as member of parliament (MP) for Central Westmoreland.

Wright, a first-term MP, has been under pressure after he was linked to a video which shows a woman being violently beaten by a man. A police investigation into the matter was closed due to what the cops say was the unwillingness of Wright and a female, who is believed to be on the receiving end of the blows, to cooperate with the lawmen.

The Jamaica Labour Party, however, relieved Wright of all party-related duties on April 19 to facilitate deliberations over his future. He was also made to withdraw from the party’s parliamentary caucus. But Wray, who is currently in a verbal spar with popular personality Miss Kitty, said Wright should stand his ground.

NOT CONCERNED WITH PUBLIC OPINION

“If everybody who is in a job now, who has had to throw a blow or two, start to resign, what is going to happen? Three quarters of Jamaica will have to resign from what they are doing,” Wray added. Wray, who goes by the name One1Can in the entertainment business, said his stance is not fueled by a desire to be popular.

“I am not concerned with public opinion (and) I am unconcerned with political correctness,” he told THE STAR. “I am not advocating for men to abuse or beat their women. I am not advocating for that. Where I am coming from is the fact – the irrefutable fact – that it was the norm in our society for men to beat their women and their wives. The 1960s, 70s and up to the 80s it was the norm. It was not something that was frowned upon and that is the truth.”

“Now some of us, especially older men, persons who are coming from those generations, still haven’t evolved yet because it has always been a cultural thing in our society. Some of our men have not yet re-cultured,” he said.

Wray said that it is unfair to use ’emotion’ and public opinion to force Wright’s resignation. He maintains that the matter should be looked at from a wider perspective.

“There are women in our society who say that if dem men don’t beat them, they don’t love them. There are women in society today who will slap the man because they want to get a physical reaction from the man because it arouses them. It is a complex issue. There are nuances to the issue that we are not tackling, we just going off our emotions,” said Wray who admits to having been hurt by women in the past.
