As a manager at Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery in New York, Damion Hawthorne keeps tabs on figures for one of the Jamaican Diaspora’s most successful business ventures. Having played in bands for most of his life, he is also passionate about music.

Recently, as Damiedon, he recorded and released the song, Next Morning.

“The inspiration behind the song came about because I wanted to push harder for success. Telling myself that I want to wake up successful or rich motivated Next Morning. Marrying the idea and the music was easy,” he said.

This is actually Damiedon’s second single. His first, Goodbye For Now, came out in 2017 following the death of his uncle, Golden Krust founder Lowell Hawthorne.

On Next Morning, he addresses the challenges he and his family witness regularly while doing outreach work in New York City.

Damiedon and his siblings are the children of pastors. Raised in Kingston, Jamaica, they played in the church band and developed a sense of community.

That benevolence continued when they migrated to the United States in 2002. Through their parents’ Bible Truth Church of God International in Brooklyn and the mega-successful Golden Krust eatery, the Hawthornes are involved in outreach programs that assist the elderly and indigent.

Eager to expand his ties to music, in 2018 Damiedon co-founded Voice Out. The weekly freestyle event is open to artists from diverse backgrounds “with a goal to positively impact the lives of young people by providing aspiring artists of various genres and skillsets, a space to showcase their talents.”

Yahweh, the follow-up to Next Morning, is scheduled for release in June.
