The past year has been a tough one for commercial sectors including the entertainment industry. With global vaccinations on the rise, there is hope that the worst of the Coronavirus is past.
Good Morning America announced the return of its popular Summer Concert Series. Among the acts featured are Shaggy, Sean Paul and Spice, currently doing the rounds with their hot single, “Go Down Deh”.
The trio are scheduled to perform virtually on June 11. With the music scene slowly re-opening, singer Nadine Sutherland told Reggae Global Radio that the dancehall presence on such a high-profile show, is a positive.
“We really can’t speculate how this appearance will resonate, we can only hope. We pray and hope that this exposure will recapture and probably create new audiences for the reggae/dancehall genre,” she said. “This is the beginning of the post-pandemic where people want to break free from all the social distancing that was required. This is a feel-good song, we hope that the infectious vibe of the song will be felt by the American audience.”
While Shaggy and Sean Paul have done the summer concert and late-night shows multiple times, Spice makes her mainstream debut. She was a popular cast member of “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta”; the VP Records-distributed “Go Down Deh” may just be her breakthrough hit in the United States.
“Spice’s audience is already wide. However, this exposure on GMA, hopefully will expand her audience into middle-America. Her fan base is strong in the ethnic and urban markets of America,” Sutherland points out. “Being that Shaggy and Sean Paul are co-leads on the track, and middle-America are already familiar with them, this can be beneficial for her, as this can help in the expansion of her exposure.”
Korean boy group BTS will kick off the series on May 28. Pitbull and Sheryl Crow are also down to perform.
