In less than two weeks, Jamaicans will be drawn to their televisions and smart phones as the Olympics take place in Tokyo, Japan. They will celebrate independence on August 6 during the Games.
Derrick Scott plans to observe both events from his home in South Florida. In preparation, the gospel singer recently re-released the inspirational song, God Answers Prayers.
Produced by Willie Lindo, the single was first released in 2018. This time around, it is boosted by a video depicting Jamaica’s sporting prowess, scenes of independence celebrations and its lush countryside.
“The video captures the concept of what the song is about, showcasing the beauty of Jamaica’s landscape and the people,” Scott said.
Interestingly, God Answers Prayers is driven by the music of My Leader Born Ya, a controversial song used by the governing People’s National Party for the 1976 election in Jamaica.
Scott was a boy in the town of Linstead in St. Catherine parish when it came out. He remembers the impact it had on voters and decided to revisit the beat.
“The idea to use My Leader Born Ya’s riddim is based on the message in that song and the particular line about ‘he gave l a message’. So, on my interpretation l try to deliver a gospel message,” he explained.
Jamaica gained independence from Great Britain in 1962, 14 years after quarter-miler Arthur Wint won the country’s first gold medal at the London Olympics.
Scott salutes the triumphs of Jamaican athletes in God Answers Prayers’ video. It features clips of superstar sprinter Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who goes for a third straight 100 meters good medal in Tokyo.
Derrick Scott will be part of the audience.
“I am looking forward to watching the Olympics and to see our country representing in all its glory to the world,” he said.
