Veteran roots group Link & Chain has released Don’t Do That”, a rocking follow-up to Ready which came out in March. Their latest single is produced by Lloyd Shaw for Issachar Muzik and distributed by Tuff Gong International.
Don’t Do That is driven by the music of Peter Tosh’s Reggaemylitis. Dwight Campbell, one of the quartet’s three original members, said there was no intention to revisit the reggae legend’s 1981 hit.
“We sent the song to the musicians and they really took things from there. When I heard the track, I sensed the Reggaemylitis sound but I guess is jus’ a vibes,” he said.
Campbell, lead singer Paul Williams and Trevor Douglas started Link & Chain in their hometown of Port Maria, St. Mary parish, Jamaica 35 years ago. Oniel Griffiths recently joined the group.
After over one year of inactivity due to Covid-19, Link & Chain got back in the groove early this year with Ready which is co-produced by guitarist Ian “Beezy” Coleman (of Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers fame) and bassist Devon Bradshaw, who has toured with Burning Spear and Garnet Silk.
Coleman and Bradshaw also played on Don’t Do That, along with keyboardists Phillip “Winta” James and Acheme Anthony Jarrett, saxophonist Richard Howse, drummer Donovan Miller and trumpeter Hopeton Lewis.
Link & Chain started as proteges of producer Lawrence “Jack Ruby” Lindo, the man behind Burning Spear’s seminal 1975 album, Marcus Garvey. He produced their first album, New Day, which was released in 1989.
VWS.T.O.P., their second album, followed in 1992. Campbell said Link & Chain’s third album is scheduled for release this year.
