Gramps Morgan said Spice, like the rest of the artistes named, deserved the nomination.—
Gramps Morgan never dreamed about the possibility of being nominated for a Grammy award when he was working on his latest album, Positive Vibration.
Instead, his focus was on creating the best quality work possible. But, despite that, the stoic Gramps, who has now been nominated three times for a Grammy award, nearly lost it on Tuesday while watching the nominations on YouTube.
“I grabbed on to my son Divine’s neck and started screaming. He was sitting right next to me on the couch while we were watching. I was so happy. My heart was full as I reflected on my journey, my band Morgan Heritage and all the producers I have worked with throughout the years. A moment like this makes you truly reflect on life,” an animated Gramps told THE STAR.
The Grammy winner, whose sibling group Morgan Heritage won the reggae Grammy in 2015 for the album Strictly Roots, stated that this nomination is one for the entire family.
“If you know my family, you should know that family is first, no matter what. This is a great accomplishment for my family that is blood and [those who] are not blood. This journey and accomplishment makes me so grateful for life,” he said.
The 15-track Positive Vibration is described by Forbes magazine as an album which “beautifully blends reggae and country … with songs that have a tropical island feel, with the added beauty of country instruments like the steel guitar and dobro”.
Gramps’ aim “was to share the story of reggae music, of its rich history past present and future”.
He added “My biggest hope was for the album to be heard by my fans all across the world and to see the possibilities of this great island and genre called reggae music. Thank you to all of my team and friends who believed in me. People like Sean Edwards, India.Arie, Shaggy, Justin Cortelyou, my father Denroy Morgan, my son Jemere Morgan, Lybran The Rum Boss. All of these people are instrumental in the key success of this album. This is a great victory for Jamaica and reggae music.”
