Singer Mr. D came of age in a Jamaica where artists and men, generally, treated women with respect. It’s a trait he admired and emulated. That respect oozes from Extra Classy Girl, his latest song, which he co-produced with Douglas McLeary for his Symbolic Fresh Music label.
“Every woman show class in different ways, so woman is to be respected. Mi have mother, mi have sister, so mi have to represent my culture,” said Mr. D. The Atlanta, Georgia-based artist grew up in the Maxfield Road area of Kingston, Jamaica where many great reggae acts frequented in the 1960’s and 1970’s.Among them was Alton Ellis, the acclaimed king of rock steady whose easy listening ballads had a great influence on him. “He is my direct idol, jus’ him style an’ everything. Alton was a man of class,” said Mr. D. It was not until recent years that his own career launched. That came in 2019 with the humorous Pum Pum Yam. That was followed by My Reward and A Vision, both co-written by Mr. D and McLeary.
